Position Summary
Park Ranger Supervisors serve as a first-line supervisor responsible for leading and directing Park Rangers in the protection, preservation, and maintenance of city parks and recreational facilities. This position requires strong leadership capabilities, field experience, and the ability to ensure public safety while providing exceptional visitor services.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Park Ranger Supervisors will serve as Platoon Supervisors, exercising direct authority and responsibility over assigned Park Rangers.
Essential Functions
- Maintain constant vigilance and oversight of all Rangers assigned to their platoon, ensuring operational readiness and adherence to departmental standards.
- Plans, organizes, assigns and directs the work activities of subordinate staff to realize the unit’s work goals and to ensure the consistent application of unit and/or technical policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Conduct thorough inspections of subordinate Rangers during roll call procedures to verify proper uniform compliance, equipment readiness, and professional appearance standards are maintained.
- Confers with and counsels subordinate staff to exchange information and/or explain work policies, procedures and guidelines; and identify work-related problems, problem characteristics, and impact and formulate possible solutions.
- Reviews and compares work performance and/or products of subordinate staff with established standards to determine employee production levels, training needs and to determine for recommendation to agency management appropriate personnel actions such as promotions, disciplinary actions, status changes, separations and grievance dispositions.
- Provide continuous leadership, guidance, and mentorship to subordinate personnel, including ongoing observation of duty performance, professional demeanor, and conduct.
- Conduct regular vehicle patrols throughout assigned parks and SLMPD approved areas to ensure public safety and SLMPD approved facility security.
- Respond promptly to reported disturbances, emergencies, and vehicle breakdowns within city park boundaries.
- Provide professional assistance and information to park visitors, addressing inquiries and concerns.
- Issue citations and traffic violations in accordance with municipal codes and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with park rules and regulations through education and enforcement.
- Generate comprehensive incident reports documenting all significant events, violations, and emergency responses.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation as required by SLMPD departmental procedures.
- Trains subordinate staff in the work principles, policies and or procedures to maintain and/or improve the production levels of employees in accordance with established work performance standards.
- Assigns tasks and reviews work of Park Rangers.
- Enforces department policies and procedures.
- Regulates criminal and non-criminal behavior by enforcing ordinances, investigating suspected perpetrators and apprehending criminals.
- Resolves conflict, maintains order by assisting police, fire and EMS departments, as needed.
- Issues citations to violators.
- Controls traffic and crowds as needed.
- Responds to inquiries from travelers and the general public.
- Responds to alarm calls coming from city facilities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Currently employed as a Park Ranger with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
- Minimum of three years of experience in park ranger patrol duties, demonstrating a thorough understanding of day-to-day operational responsibilities.
- Possession of a valid Missouri driver’s license.
Knowledge:
- A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.).
- Security and emergency response procedures.
- A comprehensive knowledge of city park ordinances and regulations.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and handle challenging situations.
- Proficiency in operating equipment, machinery and tools related to the job.
- Strong verbal aptitude and ability to interpret various forms of information.
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills in dynamic environments.
- Physical capability to perform duties involving lifting, patrolling, and responding

PHYSICAL/VISUAL ACTIVITIES OR DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach, grasp, talk, and hear.
This position requires clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and the ability to bring objects into sharp focus, while reading from a computer screen.
The job has light physical demand (primarily sedentary) requiring the employee to exert negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects in the normal course of routine office activities.
